I would include consistency and follow through. People often say that half of success is turning up. I've found that if you remain engaged in your client's business and always respond sincerely, even if it's just to thank them for their feedback, it creates a great sense of recognition for people and they remember you.

This is a great post.
Word of mouth definitely travels... and for people out there providing sub standard or dollar chasin' solution... be cautioned... cos it a two lane highway! :)

You hit it on the nail. The key is people. The people in any organization are it's most valuable commodity. You mentioned quality talent, which comes from quality people. I believe it's important to remember who someone is may be more important then what they know. Talent without character, passion, and drive can be be destructive even toxic to an organization.

Thanks for your reply, Daniel. For what it's worth, my wife agrees with you that within-TLD search is useful and likely to increase with the changes, particularly given the possibility that new registrars might better maintain their real estate (eg demote squeeze pages).

So, yes, it should definitely be fun to see what happens.

Cheers,

Peter

Peter,

Thanks for disagreeing with my thoughts here. You have all good points. My thoughts are that TLD will make the simplicity of the URLs more useful for promotions.

In other words, if TLDs flop and merely become a resource for more volume of URLs (like adding .biz) then you are correct.

I believe that just like Google gained a foothold on search as a whole, I believe there will be industry segments of little googles.

If dot-museum becomes the place to find museums vs general search than search challenges become more dynamic (as they always do).

That being said if I am wrong, this will be a fun post to laugh at later on. Thanks for the comment.

Daniel, I'm not understanding why TLD's affects any of this.

On point 1, coke can already set up my-name.coke.com. To shorten to my-name.coke seems cosmetic.

On point 2, today we don't see SEO effort restricted to within-TLD. This is because Google aggregates all TLD's, I can't see why TLD-restricted search would become more popular just because the number of TLD's increases.

Same point with 3. Do people care how they rank within dot-museum, or do they care how they rank worldwide for a given keyword?

Apologies if I'm missing something.
